ハワイ生活 Hawaii life

Blog

Hello everyone, or should I say Aloha!
My sincerest apologies, I have been working on fixing up my house for the last 11 months, though part time.
It has been a long and challenging experience. I have to say that for those who are in the construction trade or even DIYers ( Do It Yourself ) like me its not an easy task.
I’ve learned a lot about home renovations and repairs so I hope from now on I can fix simple things in this house.

First of all tonight is the Annual Hawaii Kai Boat Parade.
This is when boat owners decorate their boats with fancy lights, and people partying while parading on the water.
Prizes are awarded for the best in show boats.

These 3 photos were taken last year because its too cold for me to be out there tonight on the marina as we have been in cold weather for a few days. How cold is it? Well….. 62F or 16.6C. I know some of you may think its warm. Hawaii is usually 75F ( 24C ) to 85F ( 29.5C ) so everyone has jackets and long pants on.

And now just a few photos of some of the renovations I did on this house.

This bathroom took up most of my time. At first I thought it would be easy, so I started by trying to remove the existing bathtub. That was a big task, and in doing so I damaged the tile walls, so I had to take that off. I
t was a chain reaction of events. Trying to drag out the pieces of the old broken tub, I damaged the ceramic tile floor.
So I removed the floor tiles, and I looked at the toilet and the old vanity, and removed them too.
So this bathroom had a total renovation and the only thing that I put back in was the toilet.
I had moments when I thought “when is this going to end?”. But when it was finished, I was happy.
Granted I did have help on some of the renovations, and I’m thankful for that help.
I have the utmost admiration for those in the construction industry for what they do.

I tried ( learned ) how to frame and hang pictures.
These 3 Australian pictures are actually fabric handicrafts from when I visited Australia several years ago.
These fabric designs were not as easy to set compared with prints which have defined margins.

This wall was painted with a bamboo stencil. T
he left side is a lighter color, and then I ran out of paint.
So I tried to use some other leftover paint to finish the right side of this wall.
Well, it turned out much darker, so my excuse is the left side is in the sunlight, and the darker side is in the shade under big trees.

Some more framing, this time it’s Japanese art.

Now, for my birthday at one of my favorite restaurants Roy’s Restaurant in Hawaii Kai.
Blackened Ahi ( tuna ) with onigiri or rice ball.

And Roys famous Canoe, shrimp skewers, barbecue spare ribs, deep fried sushi roll and spring rolls with a side of kim chee. Delicious.

Dessert is chocolate souffle with raspberry drizzle and vanilla ice cream.

And a complimentary birthday desert.

But this is what I should be eating, an Acai bowl, though not from Roy’s Restaurant.
But its a treat to dine at Roy’s Restaurant once a year.

And finally, my Christmas Tree. I won this as a door prize at a bonsai club Christmas party.
It’s supposed to be a bonsai Christmas tree.
In actuality its a lot nicer than this photo.
Its has 16 different colors that change maybe every 10 seconds. But my phone camera is not so good.
At least it doesn’t shed any pine needles.

So I’ll say Aloha for now.
Aloha means both hello and goodbye.
Until next time, take care.
